Russia has reaffirmed its commitment to deliver the remaining S-400 Triumf missile systems to India by 2025. The delivery schedule was firmed up due to delays caused by the conflict in Ukraine. Under the $5.5 billion deal, Russia has already supplied India with three units of long-range missile systems.
India’s S-400 Triumf Missile System Deal
In October 2018, India signed a deal with Russia to acquire five units of the S-400 air defense missile systems. Despite warnings from the US about potential sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), India proceeded with the contract. The deployment of the S-400 systems began in December 2021, with units covering parts of the border with China and the frontier with Pakistan.
Delays and New Timeline for Deliveries
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Western sanctions affected the delivery of the remaining S-400 missile systems to India.
However, a new timeline has been firmed up, and Russia has assured India that the deliveries will be completed by 2025.
Strategic Significance for India’s Air Defense
The acquisition of the S-400 Triumf missile systems significantly enhances India’s air defense capabilities. These advanced surface-to-air missile systems are part of India’s efforts to strengthen its air power capabilities and address security challenges, especially from China. The S-400 systems are designed to destroy strategic and tactical aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, and hypersonic weapons.
Warship Deliveries from Russia
Apart from the S-400 missile systems, India is also set to receive warship deliveries from Russia.
India is expected to take delivery of two Russian-built frigates. The first frigate, named INS Tushil, is expected to arrive in September, while the second frigate, named INS Tamal, will be supplied by Russia in January. Originally, these ships were supposed to be delivered by 2022, but the delays were attributed to Russia’s involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.
India-Russia Defense Collaboration
India and Russia have a long-standing defense collaboration. In 2018, India signed a four-frigate deal with Russia, and the two remaining stealth frigates are currently under construction in India. This collaboration highlights the strategic partnership between the two countries in the defense sector.
India’s Diplomatic Stance on Ukraine Conflict
Unlike many other leading powers, India has not directly criticized Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. Instead, India advocates for a diplomatic and dialogue-based resolution to the crisis. This stance emphasizes India’s commitment to maintaining diplomatic balance in a complex geopolitical landscape.
Project Kusha and Indigenous Defense Development
Concurrently, India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is spearheading Project Kusha. This project aims to develop a long-range air defense system that can detect and neutralize enemy projectiles and armor, including cruise missiles, stealth fighter jets, and drones. The indigenous defense development under Project Kusha is set for deployment by 2028-29 and will further strengthen India’s air power capabilities.
