North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is reportedly planning to travel to Russia this month for a “leader-level diplomatic engagement” with President Vladimir Putin to further arms negotiations, reported CNN, citing information from the US government.

US National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson claimed that the US has information suggesting that Kim Jong Un is expecting discussions on arms negotiations to continue, including high-level talks in Russia. However, she did not specify the exact timing or location of the potential meeting between Kim and Putin.

This development follows Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu’s visit to North Korea in July and comes amid reports that Russia and North Korea are actively advancing their negotiations for a potential arms deal. This deal could involve North Korea supplying weaponry to support Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine.

Adrienne Watson urged North Korea to cease its arms negotiations with Russia and to honor its previous commitments not to provide or sell arms to Russia.

Recent interactions between Russian officials and North Korea include a group of Russian officials traveling to Pyongyang for follow-up discussions, and both Putin and Kim exchanging letters pledging to increase bilateral cooperation.

The news of potential arms negotiations between Russia and North Korea has raised concerns in the United States, particularly given Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Biden administration has been monitoring these developments closely and is committed to publicizing Russia’s efforts to bypass Western sanctions and acquire weapons for its war.

This public disclosure of intelligence highlights the US government’s determination to address Russia’s actions and keep a watchful eye on North Korea’s involvement in arms negotiations.
