New Delhi, India: In a significant development for regional defense cooperation, India and Vietnam are on the brink of sealing landmark BrahMos missile deal, valued at approximately $700 million. The agreement, which is expected to be confirmed in the coming months, underscores India’s growing prominence as a defense exporter, particularly in Southeast Asia.

The BrahMos missile, a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya, is renowned for its precision strike capabilities, supersonic speed, and versatility across multiple platforms. This deal includes provisions for both the Vietnamese Army and Navy, offering strategic advantages in terms of coastal defense and air-launched capabilities from platforms like the Sukhoi Su-30.

Enhancing Defense Ties Between India and Vietnam

This potential deal strengthens defense ties between India and Vietnam, both of which have been keen on countering regional security challenges, notably in the South China Sea, where territorial disputes persist. Vietnam’s interest in the BrahMos system aligns with its strategy to modernize its defense capabilities and diversify its military equipment suppliers, reducing reliance on traditional arms providers like Russia.

Impact on India’s Arms Export Ambitions

For India, this deal is a testament to the success of its ‘Make in India’ initiative and its aspirations to become a significant player in the global arms market. With the Philippines already having secured BrahMos systems, this agreement with Vietnam would further cement India’s role in regional security dynamics, offering a counterbalance to Chinese influence.
