In a significant stride towards enhancing India’s defence capabilities, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to resume Sukhoi Su-30MKI production at its Nashik facility. This development follows the approval of a $1.3 billion contract in September 2023 for the manufacture of 12 new aircraft aimed at replenishing the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) fleet due to losses from various incidents.
The revival of the Nashik plant, which was initially established for the Su-30MKI production, aligns with India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. This program seeks to promote self-reliance in defence production, reducing dependence on imports. These aircraft will feature an indigenous content of approximately 62.6%, showcasing a significant step forward in India’s aerospace manufacturing sector.
The Indian Air Force has been looking to maintain and expand its operational strength, especially in light of regional security dynamics. The Sukhoi Su-30MKI, known for its multi-role capabilities, including air superiority and deep interdiction, is pivotal in this strategy. The Nashik facility, with its expertise in manufacturing and overhaul, is expected to streamline production, aiming to deliver the new jets within the next three years.
HAL’s proposal to add another 72 Su-30MKI fighters to the IAF’s inventory signifies a long-term vision for the Indian defence sector, potentially expanding the fleet to over 344 aircraft. This expansion would not only strengthen the IAF’s operational squadrons but also promote research and development within India, pushing for innovations in avionics, radar technology, and weapon systems integration.
‘Super Sukhoi’ Upgrades
Parallel to the production of new jets, the IAF is preparing for the comprehensive upgrade of 84 existing Su-30MKI fighters under the ‘Super Sukhoi‘ program. This upgrade, valued at approximately INR 63,000 crore, aims to elevate the aircraft’s performance to near fifth-generation standards, enhancing their combat effectiveness in modern warfare scenarios.
