The Indian Air Force (IAF) has recently taken delivery of the first of six new Do-228 Dornier aircraft from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). These upgraded aircraft are equipped with new engines, advanced avionics, and a modern glass cockpit. The Do-228 is a highly versatile aircraft that is perfect for short-haul operations and can be utilized for a wide range of purposes, including utility transport and maritime surveillance. This acquisition will significantly boost the operational capability of the IAF, especially in remote regions where access is challenging. This upgraded version of the aircraft boasts new engines, composite propellers, advanced avionics, and a modern glass cockpit.

In March, the Ministry of Defence finalized the agreement to acquire six Dornier-228 aircraft from HAL for the Indian Air Force. The budget allocated for this procurement is Rs 667 crore. These aircraft, originally utilized by the IAF for Route Transport Role and communication tasks, have also played a crucial role in training transport pilots.

This new batch of six aircraft is equipped with enhanced fuel-efficient engines and five-bladed composite propellers. These features make them highly versatile and perfect for short-haul operations, especially on semi-prepared or short runways, particularly in the northeastern and island regions of India. The Dornier-228 aircraft is a lightweight and multifunctional transport aircraft that can be effectively used for various purposes.

The Dornier-228 aircraft is a versatile asset, designed to meet a range of needs including utility and commuter transport as well as maritime surveillance. The acquisition of six of these aircraft will greatly enhance the operational capability of the Indian Air Force (IAF), especially in remote and challenging regions.
