The Indian Navy is set to bolster its underwater combat capabilities with the integration of next-generation torpedoes on its fleet of Kalvari-class submarines. This move is part of a broader modernization strategy aimed at enhancing the Navy’s firepower and stealth in response to evolving maritime security challenges.

In a significant development announced recently, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has inked a contract worth ₹877 crore with the French company Naval Group for the integration of the Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedo (EHWT) on board these Scorpene-class submarines. This collaboration will see the Indian Navy, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and Naval Group working together to fit these submarines with advanced weaponry.

The EHWT is anticipated to significantly augment the offensive capabilities of India’s submarine fleet, offering stealth, precision, and power. This upgrade comes alongside another contract for the integration of Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, which will allow these submarines to stay submerged for longer periods, thus enhancing their operational endurance and strategic reach.

The Kalvari-class submarines, also known as Project 75, are diesel-electric attack submarines built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai through a partnership with Naval Group. With five submarines already in service and one more set to be commissioned, this class forms a critical part of India’s naval strategy in the Indian Ocean Region.

These technological enhancements come at a time when India is focusing on indigenous development and production to reduce reliance on foreign military hardware. The integration of EHWT is not only a step towards improving combat capabilities but also aligns with the “Make in India” initiative, promoting self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

The navy’s efforts to arm its submarines with the latest weaponry reflect a broader push towards maintaining a strategic edge in submarine warfare, especially in light of the increasing naval presence of other regional powers. With these upgrades, the Indian Navy aims to ensure that its submarines can operate effectively in various combat scenarios, contributing to India’s maritime security and strategic deterrence.

This initiative has been met with enthusiasm from defence analysts who see it as a vital step in enhancing India’s naval prowess. “These upgrades will give the Indian Navy a significant boost in its underwater operations, making it more capable of countering threats and protecting national maritime interests,” remarked a defence expert.

As these submarines undergo their enhancements, the Indian Navy’s commitment to modernizing its fleet is clear, positioning itself as a formidable force in the region and beyond.
